Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. Matthew 4:4
Did You Know?
That there is no letter “J” in the Greek alphabet. The name “‘Jesus’ is a transliteration of a Latin name Ioesus, pronounced heysus. In the Original King James Bible one would not find the name ‘Jesus’ inside. Instead, the would find ‘Iesus’ wrfitten. This is also a historical record of the fact the name Jesus is a very modern name in terms of history. So, does the name “Jesus” dishonor the Messiah?
The setting was Jesus (Yahushua, Yeshua, Joshua, Iesous) in the wilderness and after fasting for 40 days and forty nights (when he is at his weakest), Satan the Devil comes to him.
Side Note: It is interesting to note that Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. Who or what is the Spirit? Jesus answers this question at John 4:24. It was God who led or directed His Son out into a wilderness.
Jesus would face a test. The Adversary of God, Christ, and mankind would come to a physically weakened, hungry, and thirsty man to see if he could be broken and swayed away from the worship of the Creator of the heavens and the earth.
At Matthew 4:3, Satan challenged Jesus by saying to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” As if the hungry Son of God would perform some magic trick and turn stones into bread so that he could satisfy his hunger pangs.
As weak as Jesus was, he did not succumb to Satan’s prodding. He saw right through it. Jesus’ response to Satan was, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” (Matthew 4:4 and Deuteronomy 4:8)
Therefore, Jesus let it known to Satan the Devil that our bellies are not to rule over us. The belly is not to be God over us. Being hungry or thirsty or broken should not prompt us to break our integrity to God.
Premier and above all are the words – every word – that come from the mouth of God that we live on. While bread (food) may sustain us until we grow old, get sick and die. It is the Word of God that gives us the real-life, eternal life.
Thus, we are not to live on bread alone, but by what God says. (Note: Not what the Bible says) That Jesus is the Word of God, his Spokesman, we should listen to him as God directed us to at Luke 9:35.
